Quincy Catholic Academy

October 20, 2014

 Dear Parent/Guardian,

As you may be aware from the recent media coverage, some school age children have been impacted by the enterovirus. Quincy Catholic Academy would like to provide our parents and guardians some suggestions and information regarding this health issue that have been provided by the Quincy Public Schools Health Service Department. Mrs. Duggan is working closely and is in constant contact with the QPS Health Service Department.

In general, infants, children, and teenagers are most likely to get infected with enteroviruses because they do not have protection from previous exposures to these viruses. It appears that children with asthma are at higher risk; they should regularly take medicines and maintain control of their illness during this time. They should also take advantage of the influenza vaccine since people with asthma have a difficult time with respiratory illnesses. If symptoms of illness worsen contact your pediatrician.

Listed below are the preventative guidelines from the Center for Disease Control (CDC)

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after changing diapers
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick.
  • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick. (*Teachers at QCA are being especially careful to wipe down desks and other common areas frequently with approved disinfectant.)

Quincy Catholic Academy nurses and staff are aware and knowledgeable about this health concern and the above suggestions will be reinforced at school. We do ask that if your child is exhibiting any symptoms of illness, especially fever, please do NOT sent them to school. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Duggan at 617-328-3830 or nurse@quincycatholicacademy.org.

Thank you for your support and cooperation.
